What does it mean that Jesus said “It is finished” — and how does the completely finished work of the Cross change everything about how you relate to God, to sin, and to yourself?
One of the major roadblocks to living in the eternal purpose of God is a conscience burdened with guilt and condemnation. So many believers remain subdued in unfruitfulness and bondage, simply because they believe they’ve blown it and are now unworthy — unworthy of God’s love, unworthy of His gifts, unworthy of their calling.
But the Cross declares something completely different. “It is finished” was not a resignation. It was a victory cry. And it means that every barrier between you and the Father has been permanently, irrevocably demolished.
The Greek word tetelestai — translated “it is finished” — was a commercial term meaning “paid in full.” When a debt was completely settled, this word was written across the bill of account. Jesus was declaring: the debt of sin, the curse of the law, the barrier of separation — all of it: paid in full.
This was not the cry of a defeated man. It was the proclamation of a High Priest completing the ultimate sacrifice — the once-for-all offering that would never need to be repeated. “For by a single offering He has perfected for all time those who are being sanctified” (Hebrews 10:14). All time. One offering. Perfected.
Guilt and condemnation operate as a spiritual ceiling. They convince you that you are not worthy of access to the Father, not qualified for His gifts, and not deserving of the life He offers. They keep you in a constant cycle of self-repair — always working to be good enough, always falling short, always returning to the starting line.
But Romans 8:1 declares: “There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.” None. Not reduced condemnation. Not manageable condemnation. No condemnation — because the One who would condemn you has instead become your righteousness.
Paul distinguishes between “godly grief” that produces repentance and “worldly grief” that produces death (2 Corinthians 7:10). Godly sorrow is a Spirit-led recognition of misalignment — it leads you quickly to the Father in repentance, and equally quickly to restoration and moving forward.
Condemnation, by contrast, keeps you stuck in guilt. It doesn’t move you toward the Father — it pushes you away from Him. It says “you are too bad to come.” Godly sorrow says “come exactly as you are — the Father is waiting.” If your experience of guilt is drawing you to God, it’s godly sorrow. If it’s pushing you away, it’s condemnation — and it is not from God.
The blood of Jesus doesn’t just cover sin — it cleanses the conscience. “How much more will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered Himself without blemish to God, purify our conscience from dead works to serve the living God” (Hebrews 9:14). A purified conscience is a free conscience — one that is no longer bound by guilt, no longer kept from God by a sense of unworthiness.
Your conscience was designed to guide you — to confirm your alignment with God’s love and truth. But when guilt pollutes the conscience, it distorts this function and produces paralysis instead of freedom. The finished work of the Cross restores your conscience to its designed function: not condemning you, but confirming your freedom in Christ.
Freedom from guilt is not denial — it is declaration. You declare what the Cross accomplished and choose to receive it fully.
This is the heart of what Living From Eternity unpacks.
